I wanted to share which of the books I bought to help me learn about buying and managing buy to let property in the UK is most helpful to me.
When the books arrived, I flicked through them all and then sat down at the weekends to read them all cover to cover. Which did I find helpful and which am I never reading again?
Reviewing the buy to let books I bought
The complete guide to property investment: how to survive & thrive in the new world of buy to let. Rob Dix, 2016.
I think this is my new bedtime reading. It’s so easy to follow and gives the best real-life examples of a range of strategies for achieving different investment goals. It’s got step by step information about all the key topics from researching to financing, buying and managing a property.
Successful Property Letting, revised and updated: how to make money in buy to let. David Lawrenson, 2017.
Really helpful information on how to buy the right property in the right location and maximise yield and capital gain (equity). Also, the advise on managing tax, mortgages, insurances and agents is useful.
Using a property company to save tax 2017/18. Carl Bayley, 2017.
Ok, so it’s out of date but that’s why it was cheap. I didn’t think we were going this route but I’m glad I bought the book anyway. It’s case studies on how to increase after-tax income helped illustrate what the accountants were trying to explain to me. It also called out the downsides of using a company so that we had a more balanced view of the pros and cons. There’s anew edition every year – I’ll buy a newer one at some point.
Buy to let loose: how to buy property and leave the corporate world behind. Anshu Kotak, 2019.
Its a personal account of the author’s experiences of investing in London and the UK’s buy to let market. It reads more like a novel but at the end of each chapter she shares the lessons she learned along the way.
Bricking it: From stay at home mum to millions in property. Nicole Bremner, 2017.
It’s an interesting read and another personal account. It’s a bit short on detail to be really helpful with our side hustle. That being said, a bit of inspiration from someone who has made it work reassures me that we’re not crazy for doing it.
